Sentry Lite - monitor your children or your spouse

Posted by ClifNotes, May 2008, permalink PC Activity Monitoring

A few weeks ago, I posted a question from Jimbo about this free monitoring program. Jimbo was concerned because all the monitored data gets uploaded to the Sentry website. Some people definitely would not like that. If you don't like this application, you can check out a review of the top 20 Parental Control freebies.

Some people don't seem to mind if the personal information is hosted at Sentry's website.

Johnny wrote to tell me how he used Sentry Lite.

HP Smart Web Printing - organize web clippings before you print

Posted by ClifNotes, May 2008, permalink Printing Tools

CC wrote in with another tip. In his classic no nonsense style, he didn't give me anything but a link. I know better than to pass over his recommendations.

Who would have guessed? HP has freeware? They've made this application called HP Smart Web Printing and it's free. It's also a brilliant application that can save you tons of time and considerable amount of printer paper and ink.

I didn't care for the installer that they used, but it certainly did the job. When it was done, I had a new sidebar in Internet Explorer and Firefox. That's a great trick considering that I use a portable version of Firefox. Firefox didn't even give me a warning that someone was trying to install an addon. That's the only issue that had me worried.

HP Smart Web Printing allows you to copy web clippings in the sidebar. Once you have a few clippings, you can preview them in a page, edit or adjust them, and then print or publish them to PDF. The program seems to work flawlessly with no hiccups or lag.

Quote from the website

Save paper by combining portions of numerous web pages onto one page before printing. No more wasteful prints containing clipped pages or a few lines of useless text. Now you'll get an accurate print of the web page you see onscreen.

Once you transfer content to your custom document, you can edit the text and graphics and even resize and delete them. Then print exactly what you see on screen. HP Smart Web Printing will also save your custom document as an Adobe PDF file.

SS-Tools - free portable security utilities

Posted by ClifNotes, May 2008, permalink Software Collections

Here's a tip from Jimbo. Jimbo is one of the regular commenters here and I trust his advice.

Hey Clif - I thought your readers may be interested in the collection of free tools on offer at this site:

http://www.ss-tools.com/

SS-Tools are relative newcomers but I have found their products to be safe, efficient and very easy to use. The best part is that all are available as portable apps. I have them on a flash drive which often saves me time when working on a recalcitrant machine.

cheers.....JIMBO

Ss Data Eraser is a permanent way to securely delete files, folders and disk free space. Data Eraser completely implements the US Department of Defense DOD 5220.22 M clearing and sanitizing standard, to gives you confidence that once deleted, your data is gone forever and can not be recovered.Data Eraser prevents restoration of the old (already deleted) files at your disks. All free space at your hard disk will be wiped from old information. Nobody will ever be able to recover your files!

Ss Disk Cleaner improves your system performance by eradicating space-hogging obsolete files and files that may endanger your privacy. It scans your disks quickly and then displays the garbage files so you can decide which of them you want removed. With Disk Cleaner you can remove all traces of your online and offline activities.

Ss Registry Fixer scans the Windows registry for incorrect or obsolete information and allows you to safely clean and repair registry problems with a few simple mouse clicks. Your applications run faster, your operating system loads quicker. With regular use of window registry keeps growing, and will attracts unnecessary information that will make the system cluttered. Thus for the better performance and to ignore spyware and adware, you need to clean registry with regular interval.

Ss Startup Manager is a startup manager that allows you to manage the startup of programs in one place, either through the registry, startup folder or win.ini file. Easily find out what programs should not be running and remove them with a click of the mouse. Get rid of annoying adware, spyware and extraneous programs that do nothing but slow down your startup time.

Ss Uninstall Manager is an extremely fast, very user-friendly/easy to understand, efficient replacement for the standard Windows Add/Remove Software applet. The Standard Add/Remove Program often can't uninstall applications completely .It often leave files on the hard drive ,associated desktop icons, Start menu entries and keys in the registry. Big registry and large number of unnecessary files make the system slower and slower. Remove all the junk files clearly in seconds and improve your computer efficiency.

An overview of free turn-based strategy and war games

Posted by ClifNotes, May 2008, permalink Games

I used to be a big gamer. These days, I think I have more fun helping others and writing about free stuff. I can't seem to find the time to devote to a game that lasts more than a few minutes. That's my loss and your gain ... at least I hope you feel that way.

Fortunately, there are people out there who love to play games and write about them. I wouldn't have guessed that Samer, the author of freewaregenius, was a big gamer, but I'd have been wrong. Here's an article I found on his blog recently. If you like this type of game, you won't leave wanting.

DriveImage XML - free disk image backup

Posted by ClifNotes, May 2008, permalink Backup Tools

If the files on your PC are important to you, you should figure out a way to back up those files somehow. There are many ways to do this and lots of free backup utilities. I'm not very good at making sure my files are safe but I do occasionally back up my system with an old payware disk imager. I was lucky enough to get a free copy of Acronis TrueImage.

I've seen listings for DriveImage XML before, but I've never tried it. My friend Tony has it listed on his site so you can bet that it's a great free backup solution.

Here's a review of the DriveImage XML from Tony at Top Freeware.

Quote from Top Freeware:

Perform full backup images of your logical drives or partitions.

Features include copying directly from drive to drive, scheduling automatic backups with your task scheduler, restoring images to the existing drive or another drive and more. It uses (VSS) Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services and the images are stored in .dat and .xml files, which allows you to use third party tools to process them with. You can also use this as a plugin with BOOT CD's, which is very handy

GetIcons - scan your hard drive for thousands of icons

Posted by Respect2Glory, May 2008, permalink Icon Tools

This (25.5K) no-install program is one I've always wanted. GetIcons does what it says, it grabs icons. You can have it search a folder or the whole drive as I did. This amazing tiny program found 16,895 icons, that I've set to be saved in an Icon folder. This folder will take some time to go through. I've emailed the author so I hope he writes back.

This program works fine under Windows 95/98, NT 4.0, NT 5.0 (2000), NT 6.0 (XP).

Quote from the website

GetIcon is an icon ripper that supports EXE, DLL, SRC, SYS, and other executables. It is fast, small, and easy to use. Just select the directory (even a whole disk) and then click on Search. After some time you will get many icons in the destination directory.

List of commercial games released as freeware

Posted by ClifNotes, May 2008, permalink Software Collections

Here's a super duper list of freeware that used to be payware. Naturally, just as some of the best web articles are from Wikipedia, so is this list.

Be sure to check out the other two lists that I've linked to below.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Commercial games released as freeware are games that, in their original license, were not considered freeware, but were re-released at a later date with a freeware license, sometimes as publicity for a forthcoming sequel or compilation release.

For games that were originally released as freeware, see list of freeware games. For open source games, and commercial games re-released as open source, see list of open source games.

COOL WEBSITES

MediaFire - free file hosting made simple

Posted by ClifNotes, May 2008, permalink Web Service

You really do have plenty of free file hosting choices. Sometimes they don't stick around very long. I really liked using the OmniDrive service, but they are gone now. Recently I've been using BoxDotNet to host files I that need to share online and I'll soon be trying SkyDrive which was recommended to me by some of my friends.

The MediaFire service offers free hosting and you don't even have to register. In other words, there's no limit to the number of files you can host there. The service is very simple to use and the uploads and downloads are surprisingly snappy.

Here's an example: I uploaded this song from JimiPocius.

http://www.mediafire.com/?ztwxwbj1wbc

Quote from the website

• Share files and images with all of your friends and upload them only once

• Link to files from your MySpace page, your blog, or forums

• Upload an unlimited number of files to share with friends and family or storage

• Use folders to easily share groups of files or create galleries for all your images

• No registration necessary and no software to install

• Keep frequently used files online for easy access from any computer with an internet connection

Get Gmail! and Get Firefox!

You need a free 6 GB Gmail account to access many of the cool features at Google. After more than two years in beta testing Gmail is open to the public. Just go to http://gmail.com and sign up for an account.

I think Gmail works best in the awesome Firefox browser. It's free, easy to use, and it's way more secure than Internet Explorer. My favorite thing to do is to customize Firefox so that it does much more than IE ever could. You can select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.
