<p>I saw a new version of WinPatrol available and immediately went out to try it. I wasn't disappointed. WinPatrol has been on my machines for the last two years and I'd feel like my PC was naked without it.
<p> </p>
<p>As usual, Scotty, the Windows watchdog sits in the system tray and barks to warn you when an application makes changes to your Windows system that he feels could be important. I've previously mentioned intrusion detection software before and WinPatrol does a good job for me.

<p><div class="breakout"><p>This handy sidebar comes with a few useful functions. An analog clock, performance meters for checking CPU / Memory usage / Disk activity / Swap file usage / Active Apps / Network activity and disk usage. A calendar, quick link to your media player, volume control, quick launch, system tray, slideshow, recycle bin, clean system, weather summary, file browser, e-mail checker and a Newsroom where you can add RSS feeds. Plus an assortment of skins and plug-ins you can add. Unfortunately to add some of these plug-ins you need NET. Framework (Shriek) installed. This sidebar can be customized any way you want it, the help file does a pretty good job of explaining things.</p><p> </p><p>In general terms, I was extremely impressed. This sidebar is full of surprises, here are just a few functions. Place the sidebar on the right or left sides of the desktop or have it float. Lock it down or autohide. Stretch the size of bar. Open and close panels. Undock panels ( To re-dock the panel on bar - you need to drag and drop it back on to bar ). Hovering over a panel will pop open another window with information. Right click on a panel for properties where you can change the panel settings; or for instance: right click the windows media player - it brings up the entire menu (Very Kewl). Two items that bugged me. First, after installation and startup, the bar opened up by default on the rightside and shoved all the icons to the left. No problem, thanks to icon restore I was able to rectify that situation. In order to correct this problem, at the top of Sidebar right or left click and open up options. Click open ( appearance ) go to position section and change ( Z-order ) from always on top to normal or on desktop. This setting prevents the icons from being blasted to the port side every time the sidebar opens. Second, I set the program to run when Windows starts. This program needs time to load and it caused all kinds of flickering on the desktop, the icons flickered like a pinball machine. To me this is annoying. So, now I just open Sidebar from quick start. Other than these two minor irritations, I'll give this application four stars out of five.</p><p> </p><p>As always... have fun. <p>It's a simple download, then you are off and scanning. The website offers an ActiveX scan running out of Internet Explorer, but since I use Firefox, which lacks ActiveX, I don't use it. I did find that just under the link to the ActiveX program was a link to this single executable file.

<p>McAfee is well known for it's anti-virus software. Usually, you have to pay for their protection. They offer the free Stinger tool to help people clean out infections from PC's that don't have a good anti-virus program, or have had the anti-virus protection disabled somehow. It's a great tool you can use to help your neighbors, family and friends when they've got a problem. There is no installation required. Just download it and run it. It works on all Windows PC's as far as I know.

It appears these free downloads have been around since 2005. Surprised I haven't picked up on them sooner. Oh well, better late then never. <p><div class="breakout"><p>Never Trust A Naked Activation Code</p><p> </p><p>I have neither the skill nor the knowledge to determine whether or not Comodo Firewall Pro (formerly Comodo Personal Firewall) is an effective security device or not. I do, however, have an abundance of experience with Comodo and its support services.</p><p> </p><p>Comodo Personal Firewall (CPF) installed without problems on my computer and was exceedingly user friendly for a few days. After installation, you used an application code to activate the program (more correctly, to validate it). The code was emailed to users after each download of the program. It worked perfectly.</p><p> </p><p>When I installed the same program on my wife’s computer (from her computer, but having sent the file across our internal network), I naively tried to use my own activation code on her application. I have no idea how a whole septic tank managed to empty itself into my face from of that huge fan.</p><p> </p><p>Seeing that my activation code would not work on my wife’s computer, I downloaded the program again to milady’s machine and received a second activation code. I never got the chance to dig that code out from the detritus.</p><p> </p><p>Meanwhile, Comodo put out the new Comodo Firewall Pro (v2.4), still free, but with a sexier moniker (geekdom has its own concept of sexy). I uninstalled CPF from my computer successfully, then installed the new Comodo Firewall Pro (CFP). Another stunningly successful install!</p><p> </p><p>Surely removing whatever had lodged itself in my wife’s computer from CPF would be relatively easy to remove, so I went to work. Over three days and 30 hours of work and learning later, I was successful.</p><p> </p><p>CPF was in my wife’s computer and "live" so far as I could tell. But Windows refused to acknowledge its presence in Add/Remove or Start/Programs, the usual places where one would look to find an uninstall file. And the places that several emails from Comodo support staff directed me to look and remove whatever was there.</p><p> </p><p>Finally one directed me to the Comodo forums where a newbie can find hundreds of requests from panicky CPF users who had managed to screw something up in installation or removal (often both, it seemed). Most of the posts about these problems dated to the middle of 2006, so I felt little hope that anyone still cared about old threads.</p><p> </p><p>I signed up for the forums, found what I believed to be the best place to post my sad story and request for help. Just as my email requests for help were all answered within a couple of hours (including one early on a Sunday morning), I received a reply from a support person in the forum within an hour.</p><p> </p><p>The first thing he did was to welcome me to the Comodo forums. (Didn’t I feel special! These guys have the right idea.)</p><p> </p><p>Then, step by step, he guided me through the process of determining where Comodo Personal Firewall had lodged itself in the computer-gone-wonky. Sorting my way through some geekspeak (easier to do when you need translation to get the job done), I followed the instructions to remove the file known as fwconfig. After that, I was told it would be easy to simply delete the rest of the files in the drive where CPF had been installed.</p><p> </p><p>But no. The files were still "in use" by the application.</p><p> </p><p>With sleight of hand manoeuvres in the next forum message, Little Mac directed me to Services to disable the firewall service and driver. And away the rest of the files went from the installation drive.</p><p> </p><p>As the internet was extraordinarily slow for the next several hours, I followed old forum messages I had printed out for deleting registry entries where the word "Comodo" appeared. I was not brave enough to delete whole folders in the registry because it seemed risky since some subfolders had data from other applications. I’m adventurous, but not foolhardy.</p><p> </p><p>I got enough Comodo registry entries out that only Comodo Network Engine was still active and unremovable in the registry. Yet the new program would still not install because it recognized that the old program was still running. Only a few registry entries remained, but Windows told me "you can’t get there from here."</p><p> </p><p>In the final instruction post to the forum, Little Mac directed me to Device Manager where with a few very specific moves I was able to deactivate the offending tentacles. After that, deleting the remaining registry entries should be easy.</p><p> </p><p>But no. After rebooting, sizzling and dancing a few jigs, I returned to Device Manager to see if the engines there were indeed disabled. They were.</p><p> </p><p>Then I resorted to a computer user’s best friend—the right click menu. Lo and behold, it offered to delete the engine entries. And away each of them went, in turn.</p><p> </p><p>Minutes later, the computer was peacefully running Comodo Firewall Pro, with all cylinders humming like kittens.</p><p> </p><p>Comodo is a novice firewall user’s dream. The old activation code (which should never be installed on any application because they give no end of grief in every program they are ever used in) is gone in favour of a validation that happens automatically when the user goes online after installation.</p><p> </p><p>Comodo is easy to use, is not intrusive and receives wonderful praise from thousands of happy users.</p><p> </p><p>I must give due praise and thanks to the Comodo support staff. They were on top of everything I tried to do, giving guidance along the way. No advice is perfect in the support business, but those guys came close.</p><p> </p><p>The first time I had ever done surgery on a registry, I got down as deep as the Device Manager, did the job, deleted registry entries from there, yet still got out with my skin and my self respect intact, thanks to Comodo support.</p><p> </p><p>The only thing the whole experience cost me was my time. <p>I went there and I can honestly say it's a great free service. This wiki farm might be especially useful to those out there who contribute on other MediaWiki wiki places, like Wikipedia. I'm not going to tell you it's the best wiki farm or anything like that.

<p><b>What is an image host?</b>
<p>Images on the internet and in your email need to have a home. Every time you see an image on the internet, you are actually downloading the image to a temporary location on your hard drive. Once the image is downloaded, your web browser will show it to you in a web browser.
<p> </p>
<p>Typically, most images on web pages are located or "hosted" at the website you are viewing, but they don't have to be. Nearly all the images you see here in my wiki are actually hosted at <!--raw1Tag-->ImageShack.com<!--/raw1Tag-->.
<p> </p>
<p><b>Why do I need an image host?</b>
<p>I've been posting at websites for years now and the easiest way for me to post images is to simply use a free image host and link my images to them. This makes my webpages portable so that I don't have to change the code if I move the page to a different website. It also means that I don't have to worry about exceeding any bandwidth limits. Pictures on a website are usually the largest bandwidth hogs. I can also send my friends and family links to my images any time I want to share them. So far, I've always been able to depend on my images being exactly where I left them.
<p> </p>
<p><b>Who should I use to host my images?</b>
<p>I used to use <a class="WikiLink" id="p-c71be358ba2c88abbd24a6d7db2aecaae81d339b" href="/PhotoBucket">PhotoBucket</a> almost exclusively for displaying my online images. That changed after I found the ImageShack toolbar. The toolbar makes it extremely easy to upload images to my image host. I expect Photobucket to someday produce their own toolbar, but until then, I'm sticking with ImageShack. Both sites offer free image hosting and both also have some really great features for sharing those images. One of the ways ImageShack and Photobucket allow you to share images is with their slideshow feature. Here's an example ...

<p>I think Gmail works best in the awesome Firefox browser. It's free, easy to use, and it's way more secure than Internet Explorer. My favorite thing to do is to customize Firefox so that it does much more than IE ever could. <em>You can select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.</em>
